Since the Twelfth Century, people in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism have revered the Karmapas as spiritual leaders. The Sixteenth incarnation, H.H. Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, saw this flag in a dream. He called it Namkhyen Gyaldar, "Victorious Flag of the Buddha's Wisdom", and announced that "wherever this banner is flown, the Dharma will flourish."
The sky blue color represents the complete and profound Wisdom of the inner realization of the Buddha. The yellow color on the flag represents the complete Wisdom of limitless Compassion which bestows benefits on all sentient beings and phenomena. The wavy line and the joining of the yellow and blue colours signify the inseparability of these two Wisdoms.

This is the National Flag of Tibet.
The central snow covered mountain represents the great nation of Tibet. The six red rays emanating from the sun symbolize the six original ancestors of the Tibetan people: the six tribes called Se, Mu, Dong, Tong, Dru, and Ra. The combination of six red bands for the tribes, and six dark blue bands for the sky, represents the people's commitment to spiritual and secular rule. At the top of the snowy mountain, the sun with its rays shining brilliantly in all directions represents the equal enjoyment of freedom, spiritual and material happiness and prosperity by all beings in the land of Tibet. On the slopes of the mountain a pair of snow lions stand proudly, blazing with the manes of fearlessness, representing the country's victorious accomplishment of a unified spiritual and secular life. The two-colored swirling jewel held between the two lions represents the people's guarding and cherishing of the self discipline of correct ethical behavior. The raised jewel symbolizes Tibet's reverence for the Three Precious Gems: the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. The yellow border symbolizes that the teachings of the Buddha, which are like pure refined gold and unbounded in space and time, are flourishing and spreading. The side without a border represents Tibet's openness to non-Buddhist thought.

This flag was originally designed in 1885 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In 1950 at the inaugural conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists, it was adopted as the flag of Buddhists throughout the world.
The five colors of the flag represent the six colors of the aura which Buddhists believe emanated from the body of the Buddha when he attained Enlightenment. Blue (Nila): loving kindness, peace and universal compassion. Yellow (Pita): the Middle Path - avoiding extremes, emptiness. Red (Lohita): the blessings of practice - achievement, wisdom, virtue, fortune and dignity. White (Odata): the purity of Dharma - leading to liberation, outside of time or space. Orange (Manjesta): the Buddha's teachings - wisdom. In Tibet, the colors of the stripes represent the different colors of Buddhist robes united in one banner. Tibetan monastic robes are maroon, so the orange stripes in the original design are often replaced with maroon. The sixth vertical band is a combination of rectangular bands in these five colors, and represents a compound of the other five colors in the aura's spectrum referred to as the 'Essence of Light' (Pabbhassara).
